Services

We offer a full range of services for acoustic pianos.

Tuning

A piano should be tuned at least once a year to keep it in good condition.

Our standard tuning rates including gst are:

  • Wellington City $155
  • Lower Hutt City and Porirua City $160
  • Upper Hutt City $165
  • Kapiti Coast $170
  • Otaki, Levin and Wairarapa $175

If your piano hasn’t been tuned for a while it may need to be pitchraised prior to tuning, there is an additional charge of $50 for this service.

Schools and music teachers receive a 10% discount.

Servicing

Servicing involves general maintenance of the piano, particularly the action and keys, which in most instances is a result of normal wear and tear. Servicing includes removing string cuts from worn hammers, cleaning and lubricating all moving parts, regulating the piano, tuning and voicing.

It is important to keep a piano tuned and serviced at regular intervals to maintain the tone and feel of the piano. Ideally a piano should be serviced every 5-10 years, depending on age and usage.

Repairs

Wellington Piano Service provides all types of piano repair. This could be a small job such as fixing sticky keys or notes that are not working or a complete restoration of your instrument. A lot of small repairs can be completed in a standard tuning visit, however sometimes it is necessary for the action and keys to be taken back to the workshop to complete larger repairs.

Rebuilds

A piano requires rebuilding when servicing is no longer sufficient for it to function at its optimum level, either mechanically or tonally. Rebuilding is generally carried out on good quality instruments that can be given a new lease on life as a result.

Rebuilding is an extensive job that usually takes a number of months depending on the degree of work needing to be done. This could be a job such as restringing a piano, replacing the bridge cap or tuning plank or comprehensive work on the action. To enquire about having your piano rebuilt please contact us to arrange an assessment.

Appraisals

When buying or selling a piano it is recommended that you have a professional piano technician assess the instrument in order to give you a realistic value of the instrument and also check for any faults in the instrument that could potentially require repair. It is not possible to give the value of a piano without seeing the instrument.

Bass String Winding

The bass section of strings in a piano have copper wound over the steel core. These must be custom manufactured for each instrument. Wellington Piano Service is able to manufacture replacement sets and individual strings to order.
